Why the surprise? Times/YouGov poll shows Labour members and supporters endorse honest, principled Jeremy Corbyn
Sam Coates, Deputy Political Editor of the Times, reports today that Labour party members have backed Jeremy Corbyn by a two-thirds margin. He was elected in September with 59% of the vote. Now 66% of Labour members believe that he is doing “well”, according to an exclusive poll. The real – and very pleasing – surprise findings:
49% of members who backed Andy Burnham in the leadership race and 29% of the former supporters of Yvette Cooper are pleased with Corbyn’s leadership so far.
Facts reported in The Times: omitting the conflict-focussed flashbacks and snide remarks:
“YouGov polled all those who could have voted in the contest. Two thirds of the party’s full members, registered supporters who paid £3 to sign up, and trade unionists approve of Mr Corbyn’s performance. This rises to 86% among those who voted for him”. We summarise:
Nearly 80% of Labour members and supporters say that the party’s top team is divided – no doubt ‘careerist’ politicians believe that Corbyn will not serve their purpose.
52% of Labour members and supporters say that MPs should face automatic reselection in each parliament and roughly 20-30% said that there should be a vote only if the MP “fails badly or is very unpopular”.
Stephen Bush (New Statesman) spent most of yesterday talking to Labour party members – and his impression, of a membership that is only growing more supportive of Jeremy Corbyn’s project, was confirmed by today’s Times/YouGov poll. He adds:
“Almost half – 49% – of members who backed Andy Burnham in the leadership race, are pleased with Corbyn’s leadership thus far, while 29% of former supporters of Yvette Cooper also present a favourable view”.
Stephen Bush sees no politician in the parliamentary Labour party with the qualities needed to make an effective challenge to Corbyn:
“My instinct is that it will be Corbyn who triumphs.
